Park Announces Fall Fishing Season for 2017

Pecos, NM: Beginning September 14th, 2017, Pecos National Historical Park will be offering fishing permits for the Pecos River.  The 2017 fall fishing season will run from September 14th through November 6th.

Within the park, three miles of the Pecos River are divided into three sections or “beats.” Each beat can accommodate up to three anglers each day.  Two beats are available on a reservation system; one beat (for up to three anglers per day) is available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please note, a special use permit along with a $25 per day fee is required for each angler.  Only credit card payments will be accepted. 

Pecos National Historical Park will begin taking reservations on September 4th, 2017.  Call the dedicated phone line at (505) 757-7272.Please leave your name, the number of people that will fish (up to 3 per one-mile beat), the date you would like to fish, and contact information including the name and phone number for each person on the reservation. Please note that the park is closed to fishing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. 

Reservations are accepted in the order they are received. You will get a confirmation by phone from the fishing permit ranger within a reasonable time.

Park Offers Special Botanical Walk

LogoPecos National Historical Park will offer a free botany walk on Saturday, July 22nd. Park volunteers Susan and Dr. Ken Bower, who are members of the Native Plant Society of New Mexico, are passionate and extremely knowledgeable amateur botanists.  On this one mile roundtrip walk along the main trail, they will lead visitors in an exploration of ethno-botany, landscape history, and the interactions between wildlife and the park flora that make Pecos special.  Attendees will meet at the Visitor Center at 10:45 a.m. and proceed on to the trail from there. The tour will end at 12:30 p.m. Please come early as this is a popular program.

Pecos NHP Welcomes Native American Drum Maker

Herrera Drums 2Pecos, NM: – Pecos National Historical Park will be hosting Mr. Arnold Herrera of Cochiti Pueblo on Saturday, July 1st and Sunday, July 2nd from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. as he demonstrates the masterful technique of Native American drum making.  

Mr. Herrera, a second generation drum maker, uses cherished methods of preparation and creation that have been in place for centuries.

Visit with this engaging craftsman as he creates handmade drums using assorted tools and aspen wood for shaping.

Park Offers Special Hike to the “Lost” Church

Pecos, NM:– Pecos National Historical Park will offer a hike with Park Archaeologist Jeremy Moss to the site of the Lost Church on Saturday, July 15th. Along the one mile roundtrip hike to the ruins of the church, also known as the Ortiz Church, you will explore the fascinating history of some of the earliest missionary efforts in Northern New Mexico.  The church, which dates from 1617-1621, was first described and mapped by Adolph Bandelier in 1880.  Much has been learned about this historical treasure since then—come see for yourself!

This 1.5 hour program is an off-trail hike along uneven terrain through areas frequented by snakes. Visitors interested in the tour must reserve a spot, as space is limited to 15 participants. Attendees will meet at the Visitor Center at 8:30 a.m.

Park Offers Special Tour of Arrowhead Pueblo

Pecos, NM:– Pecos National Historical Park will offer a free ranger-led tour of the seldom-seen Arrowhead Pueblo on Sunday, July 30th. This one mile round-trip visit to the 14th century pueblo will explore the historical, archaeological, and cultural significance of this 100+ room ruin. Visitors interested in the tour are advised to reserve a spot, as space is limited. Attendees will meet at the Visitor Center at 1:00 p.m. and caravan to the trailhead with the ranger.

Please note that this tour will only be offered twice more this summer: Sunday, August 27th and Saturday, September 23rd.  We will be accepting reservations for all dates.
