Artillery Hill abandoned – Main Phase – Late afternoon, March 28th
After encountering Sergeant Peticolas, Federal Lt. Colonel Tappan led his men along the logging road, earlier used by Claflin’s artillery battery, to abandon Artillery Hill and avoid capture. You are standing on the trace of that logging road at a point where scattered Confederates, now on the crest of Artillery Hill, fired at the Colorado volunteers, who were withdrawing rapidly down the narrow road toward its junction with the Santa Fe Trail, east of Pigeon’s Ranch. One group of retreating Federals stopped here to return the Texans’ fire.
